All You Need to Know About Cortisol
Share
Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, which sit atop the kidneys. Often dubbed the "stress hormone," it plays a vital role in the body’s response to stress, regulating metabolism, reducing inflammation, and assisting with memory formulation. Cortisol is part of the glucocorticoid family of hormones and is released as part of the body’s fight-or-flight mechanism, triggered by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
When a stressor—physical, emotional, or environmental—activates this system, the brain signals the adrenal glands to pump out cortisol, preparing the body to either confront or flee the threat. While this response is essential for survival, the modern world’s chronic stressors can lead to cortisol levels that are too high or too low, both of which pose health challenges.
In healthy amounts, cortisol is a lifesaver. It mobilises energy by breaking down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, ensuring muscles and the brain have fuel during stressful moments. It also tamps down non-emergency functions like digestion or immune responses, prioritizing immediate survival. However, when cortisol remains elevated due to ongoing stress—like a relentless job or constant worry—it starts to wreak havoc.
Chronic high cortisol is linked to weight gain, especially around the midsection, as it increases appetite and fat storage. It can weaken the immune system, making infections more likely, and contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease, and insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes. Mentally, it’s no picnic either—sustained high levels can lead to anxiety, depression, memory issues, and even shrinkage of the hippocampus, the brain’s memory centre. On the flip side, too little cortisol, as seen in conditions like Addison’s disease, causes fatigue, low blood pressure, and difficulty handling stress.
This is where Ashwagandha, an herb from the Ayurvedic tradition, enters the picture. Known scientifically as Withania somnifera, Ashwagandha is classified as an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body adapt to stress and restore balance. It’s been used for centuries in India to boost energy, improve focus, and calm the mind, but modern research is starting to back up its cortisol-modulating effects. Studies suggest Ashwagandha works by interacting with the HPA axis, dialling down the overproduction of cortisol in response to chronic stress.
A 2012 study published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine found that people taking Ashwagandha extract for 60 days had significantly lower cortisol levels compared to a placebo group, alongside reduced stress and anxiety scores. Another study in 2019 showed similar results, with participants reporting better sleep and lower stress, likely tied to cortisol regulation.
Ashwagandha’s benefits don’t stop at cortisol reduction. By lowering stress hormone levels, it may indirectly ease the downstream effects of cortisol overload—like better blood sugar control, improved mood, and enhanced immune function. It’s also rich in antioxidants, which combat oxidative stress, a byproduct of prolonged cortisol exposure that damages cells. Some research even hints at Ashwagandha boosting testosterone and muscle strength, possibly because less cortisol means less interference with anabolic processes. Typically taken as a powder, capsule, or tea, doses around 300-600 mg of a standardised extract daily seems most effective, though it’s wise to consult a doctor, especially if you’re on medication, as it can interact with thyroid drugs or sedatives.
Cortisol, then, is a double-edged sword—vital for survival yet potentially destructive when unchecked. Ashwagandha offers a natural way to keep it in line, smoothing out the rough edges of modern stress. While it’s not a cure-all, its ability to lower cortisol and bolster resilience makes it a compelling ally for health in a high-pressure world. Balancing cortisol isn’t just about feeling calmer; it’s about protecting the body and mind from stress’s slow burn.
